Family Albums Can Change the World
PRESENTER: THOMAS ALLEN HARRIS
In this keynote, award-winning filmmaker Thomas Allen Harris will discuss his PBS series Family Pictures USA, which began as a socially engaged art project looking at the family album as it evolved in the digital age. For 25 years, Harris has used the family album as a motif in his personal films th t mined his family and extended family archives to tell personal, national and international stories. In the process, he has gained a deeper insight on how crucial family archives are to understanding ourselves and our histories and is exploring the following questions: How can we use photographs to create powerful new narratives and foster genuine relationships with our peers, neighbors and family members? How can we use family pictures in order to ground ourselves in the truth of who we are, gain a deeper understanding and sense of empathy for those who are different from ourselves at a time where we need it most? How can we work together to create a movement to use the family album to spark creativity and make a better world?
